DCHS begins 'Sister School' relationship with Japan
"Absolutely Magical!"
That sentiment
reverberated in every though regarding a group of educators' recent trip to
Japan.
In collaboration with Owensboro sister cities/regions,
Anthony Sparks (DCHS Principal), Barbara St. John (DCHS Biology Teacher), Gail
Kirkland (DCHS Journalism Teacher), and Bill West (Owensboro Community College
Professor) traveled to Nisshin to officially sign a sister school charter
between Chubu University-Daiichi High School and Daviess County High School.
Along with tours and observations of Daiichi High School, the
group presented an engraved plaque noting the sister school agreement. The
group also exchanged hospitality gifts with Mayor, Kozo Hagino and City Leaders,
who added their endorsement of the exchange agreement.
The following day, the educators were welcomed by the
President of Chubu University, Mr. Ohnishi, who personally conducted a tour of
their campus. Communicating primarily through an interpreter, both groups
their excitement about the possibilities of encouraging a free exchange of
ideas, students, and teachers.
As part of the 8-day stay, Principal, Hideaki Fujimoto,
Office Manager, Takeshi Okajima, and English Teacher, Chika Nagao, hosted the
group for a variety of sightseeing tours, Zen meditation instruction, authentic
Japanese cuisine, and bullet train trips between Nagoya and Kyoto.
The group experienced an array of Japanese cultural
experiences, sparkling an intense interest in and appreciation of Japan.
