Announcements

Ö       ALL:  GOOD MORNING DC Family! TGIF!!!  Happy Mothers’ Day (Sunday) to all moms out there in email land!!!

Ö       OH WHAT A NIGHT!  The Awards Night last night was definitely a memory-maker for me, and hopefully for our award recipients.  The Hines Center was new for us this year, and it was very nice!  We owe a huge thank you to Kristie Miller for organizing the entire production last night.  I was reduced to tears about 3 times!  There were many others behind the scenes and one in particular that does so much work---Kris Shaw.  Kris is our guidance secretary and she handled many details last night.  THANK YOU TO ALL.  There are so many honors to mention, in fact too many for email, but highlights are below.

Ö       HONOR GRADUATE 2008:  Congratulations to JAMISON HUGHES, who was awarded the highest student award that DCHS has to offer.  Jamison has contributed so much to our community over his 4 years with us.  We will truly miss his servant leadership.  He will succeed in whatever he does and we wish him well.

Ö       TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2008:  Congratulations to MS. ANGELA GUNTER!  In a pool of outstanding candidates, Ms. Gunter rose to the top this year with her tireless efforts in getting kids to achieve at high levels.  Just this year, she received the district’s FOCUS award in literacy and received National Board Teaching status.  WOW!

Ö       YEARBOOK DEDICATION:  The senior class voted to dedicate the 2007-08 Echoes yearbook to Mr. Chad Askins.  Mr. Askins’ passion for kids and his unbridled spirit contributed to his being awarded this high honor.  CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Askins!

Ö       FBLA NEWS!  I just got word that we have a STATE WINNER!  Ryan Moore placed 1st in Accounting II at the state FBLA convention!  Also, Samantha Wurth placed 5th in Impromptu Speaking.  Congrats!  Ryan will move onto national competition in June.  GOOD LUCK!

Ö       SENIORS AND SENIOR PARENTS:  Yesterday the four administrators had some small-group meetings with the Class of 2008 to explain the graduation contract (attached) and the reasoning behind producing it.  After graduation last year, I began to do some research on other high schools’ procedures in and around that special life-changing day.  I found a wealth of resources from other schools around the nation.  This started an 8-month-long research project, involving student input, PAWS input, teacher input, and SBDM feedback.  The finished product is attached.  If anyone is able to bring back class to our ceremony, it’s the Class of 2008.  I’ve been completely impressed with their leadership and I know we’re going to have a wonderful graduation.  As explained to the seniors yesterday, they need to bring back a signed copy (both student and parent signature) by May 16th.  They should turn this in to Student Services.  Thanks for your help!  Question:  Can graduates still throw up hats?  Answer:  YES of course!  This is tradition at graduation that will continue!

Ö       THE LOFT:  On our homepage, find information about an exciting summer opportunity offered by OCTC.  Does your child need to re-learn some math or English over the summer?  How about just some enrichment?  How about some tutoring?  The LOFT is offering this to the region.  Check it out at www.dchs.dcps.org

Ö       SPANISH NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY:  The Daviess County H.S., Celia Cruz Chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society was awarded two awards recently:

1st  Place (in the Nation) for Long Term Service Project of the Year for their efforts on Rainforest Conservation.

2nd Place (in the Nation) for Short Term Service Project of the Year for having members who serve on HAGO (Hispanic Alliance of Greater Owensboro)

Ö       BASEBALL:  The make-up of the make-up of the make-up game against AHS will be this afternoon at 4:30 pm.

Ö       ACT Registration Deadline for June 14 test is May 9.  Register at www.actstudent.org or call 319-337-1270 if student has previously taken the test.

Ö       BAND BOOSTER MEETING:  May 12th in the Media Center---7:00 pm.

Ö       NURSE’S NEWS:  If your child has medication at school, it will need to be picked up by an adult by or before June 6th during the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the School Nurse Office.  Office is closed from 12-12:30 for Lunch.

If your child has a Kentucky Medicaid Card, they are eligible for EPSDT (Early, Periodic, Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment) services.  Services include well child exams, immunizations, lead screenings, eye-glasses, hearing screenings, hearing aids, dental services, medical diagnosis and treatment and much more.  Contact the Green River District Health Department for more information or to schedule an appointment for these services.   686-7747

Ö       JOSTENS UPDATE:  Saturday, May 10th Jostens-Graduation Orders, all grades place orders, pick up orders- 9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon – DCHS Lobby

Ö       DRIVER PERMIT VERIFICATION:  Please realize there’s more paperwork involved on the school’s end for students to be able to get their permit.  The school is required to look up grades and attendance, sign off, and place the school seal on the form which is taken with the parent/student to the driver test.  We ask you give the school 24 hours to get this form filled out.  It’s difficult to get this done while a parent waits, especially after the school day gets going.  We thank you for your patience and cooperation!  If your child has a summer birthday, please remember to get your verification form completed before May 30th.

Ö       SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION:  DCPS offers a summer driver’s education enrichment course for a fee of $100.  The course will run from June 2-27.  Registration can be done at www.dcps.org/summer/

Ö       PARENTS – If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to contact your Site Base Council Representatives, Jo Barron, (jrb6@omuonline.net) and/or Scott Jagoe, (scott.jagoe@jagoehomes.com).  They will provide you with help and if necessary, will share your thoughts at the next monthly council meeting.
