AGRICULTURE

 

PRINCIPLES OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: 620 (Intro to Agriculture)

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Highly recommended for 1st year agriculture students

Introduces students to the various segments of the agriculture industry.  Local and State occupational opportunities will be emphasized.  Basic animal science, plant and land science, environmental sciences and agricultural mechanics skills will be introduced along with the selections and planning of an agricultural experience program and related record keeping.  Leadership development will be provided through FFA.  Students will receive personal guidance and counseling with preparatory instructional program selection.

 

WELDING 1: 621  (Articulates with OCC)

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and beyond level course

This course is for students who have not had Welding.  The course will include running flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead beads as well as welding joints in all areas.  Students will be expected to build a project out of metal, use computers for drawing their blueprints, have proper clothing and shoes for safety, and use the oxygen/acetylene cutting outfit.  General shop safety and welding shop safety will also be taught during this class.  Leadership and FFA skills will also be taught.

 

WELDING 2: 622     (Articulates with OCC)

9Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Welding 1/Teacher Approval

This welding course will be an extension of Welding 1.  The course will include gas welding, mig-welding, stick welding and pipe welding.  Students will be expected to have proper clothing and shoes for safety.  Students will also be using the oxygen/acetylene torch to cut metal.  General shop safety and welding shop safety will also be taught during this class.  Students will be building projects, which they have drawn on the computer.  Students will also have leadership and FFA development skills

 

WELDING 3/PROJECT CONSTRUCTION: 642

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Welding 1 & 2/Teacher recommendation

This course is for students who have completed Welding 1 and 2 and wish to build a project.  Students will be expected to build a project at their expense out of metal, have proper clothing and shoes for safety, and use the oxygen/acetylene cutting outfit.  General shop safety and welding shop safety will also be taught during this class.  Leadership FFA skills will also be taught.

                                                                     

GREENHOUSE TECHNOLOGY: 623

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and beyond level course

This course includes greenhouse structure, regulating the greenhouse environment, plant propagation, plant growth, structure and environment of the plants for bed and container growing, and production cycles.  Variety selection, fertilization, pest and disease control, and growth regulators are stressed.  Content may be enhanced with appropriate computer application.  Leadership development will be provided through FFA.  Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program.

 

COMPUTERS IN AGRICULTURE: 626  (Articulates with OCC)

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Grade 9-12/Counts as Computer Applications Class

This course develops basic skills to manage a farm or agri-business.  Students will use the following computer programs: Microsoft Office package to gain experience in using Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and other pertinent software programs.  Students will also receive an introduction to the Internet.

 

SMALL ENGINES: 627

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and beyond level course

This course includes identification of small gasoline engine parts and how each part functions.  All students will be expected to disassemble and reassemble a small engine.  Engines include lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, chain saws, etc.  Students will have to pay for replacement parts on all engines repaired if they want them to run. 

 

HORSE PRODUCTION: 628

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and beyond level course

Develops scientific knowledge and skills pertaining to breed identification and selection, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, genetics, and reproductive management, training principles, grooming, health disease control and sanitation practices.  Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program.

 

 SMALL ANIMAL TECHNOLOGY: 630

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and beyond level course

Develops scientific knowledge and skills pertaining to nutrition, health, general care, and breeds of small animals such as dogs, cats, and rabbits as well as large animals such as cows, horses, hogs, etc.  Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program.

 

ANIMAL SCIENCE: 632                 (Articulates with OCTC)

18 Weeks/1 Credit/ Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Year with successful completion of Small/Large Animal Technology or instructor approval/ This class is offered as an accelerated credit.

College credit may be gained from this class. Develops knowledge and skills pertaining to livestock identification, selection, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, as well, as health management and marketing of one or more species of farm animals. The latest biogenetic applications will be included. The fee includes to workbook required for this class. Leadership and FFA will also be taught in the class.

 

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT: 633

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Grade 10-12

The curriculum includes opportunities in the field of biology and fish and wildlife management. The course will include instruction in fish and wildlife identification and management techniques as well as soil and water stewardship. Content may be enhanced with appropriate computer applications and fieldwork. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. 

 

AGRI-SCIENCE COOPERATIVE PLACEMENT 1: 634

36 Weeks/2 Credits/Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Year and enrolled in another Agriculture course during the school year  (1 Block)

Students will be expected to have an agricultural-related job experience program and work the hours they would normally be in school.  Students will report to their Co-op supervisor each day before leaving, and must keep records of earnings and hours worked.  The Co-op instructor will visit the on-site work experience for evaluation consultation with the immediate supervisor.

                                                                       

FLORICULTURE/FLORAL DESIGN:  639

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Grade 10-12

Floral Design provides instruction to develop floral design techniques using silk, dried, and fresh flowers.  Students will learn operation and management techniques of a florist business as well as identification, production and cultural maintenance practices of plants used in floral design and interior landscaping.  Content may be enhanced by utilizing appropriate technology.  Leadership development will be provided through FFA.

 

AGRICULTURE ELECTRIFICATION:  640

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Grade 10-12

An introductory course to provide a limited overview of electrical applications to a farm.  Electrical safety at home and on the farm will be of paramount consideration.  Proper installation of electrical boxes, panels, disconnects, motors, and branch circuits will be covered in this class.  Content may be enhanced by utilizing appropriate technology.  Leadership development will be provided through FFA.

 

VETERINARY SCIENCE:  641

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: Intro to Ag or Small Animal/Grades 10-12

The purpose of this class is to acquaint the student with Veterinary Medicine by exploring basic knowledge that would be essential in the career field.  The topics covered would enhance other Animal Science instruction offered and will prepare the student for continuing education in the field of Animal Agriculture/Vet Science.  Content may be enhanced by utilizing appropriate technology.  Leadership development will be provided through FFA.
