This course offers the basics of English.  Students will study introduction to literature, grammar skills, reading skills and the elements of writing.

This course will allow students to explore different genres with an emphasis on the world cultures that created the literature, as well as various essay forms and introduction to research skills. A continuation from English 1 grammar skills will be covered.

 

ENGLISH 3: 202

This course will feature American literature, research skills and grammar and composition.

 

ENGLISH 4: 204

This course will consist of an intensive review of grammar through composition, British literature, and compilation of the writing portfolio.

 

ENGLISH 1 (Accelerated): 205

This course provides a more intense study of the materials offered in English I.  Students will develop skills in the elements of literature, personal and formal composition, and rules of grammar as they apply to written and oral communication.

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Accelerated English 1, Summer reading of two novels from the list for each level and satisfactorily completed written project which follows a given criteria, English 1 with instructor recommendation

This course will feature American literature, research skills and advanced composition.

 

ENGLISH 3 (Accelerated): 207

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Accelerated English 2, Summer reading of two novels from the list for each level and satisfactorily completed written project which follows a given criteria.

This course will offer the study of major writers and works of British literature; writing from the Anglo-Saxon era to the Twentieth century will be analyzed.   Through the writing process students will learn organization and development of ideas, as well as grammatical mechanics.

NOTE:  The curricula of Accelerated English 1, 2, and 3 will build toward an AP English 4 class to assure success in Advanced Placement Testing for AP English 4.  Course demand and level of instruction is of the highest dimension and demonstration of critical thinking skills is expected.

 

AP ENGLISH 4 (LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION): 208

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Accelerated English 1, 2, 3, or AP Language and satisfactory completion of summer reading.  Seniors Only.

This class provides skills for analysis of literature (primarily fiction/poetry), as well as advanced composition (portfolio, essays, and on-demand assignments) that will provide students preparation for the advanced placement test, possibly for college credit. English 4 credit or an English elective credit will be given with successful completion of this class.

 

AP English 4 (Language and composition): 2100

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite:  Accelerated English 1, 2,  and successful completion of summer reading.

This class provides skills for rhetorical analysis of writings (primarily non-fiction), as well as advanced composition (portfolio, essays and on-demand assignments) that will provide student preparation for the advanced placement test, possibly for college credit. English 4 credit or an English elective credit will be given with successful completion of this class.

MYTHOLOGY:  195

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: English 1-Sophomore and Above

This 18-week course combines the former 9-week Greek and Roman Mythology elective with the former 9-week World Mythology elective.  This course is open to any student who has an interest in furthering his or her knowledge of mythologies of the world.  Students will be expected to participate in all reading and writing assignments, participate in group and individual projects and complete a final project over a mythological being. 

 

 

CREATIVE WRITING: 213

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: English 1

This 18-week course combines the former 9-week Poetry elective with the former 9-week Creative Writing elective.  This course is open to any student interested in developing creative writing techniques.  Reading and writing strategies as well as grammar and mechanics instruction will round out the class curriculum.  Students will be expected to participate in all writing tasks, share work during peer conferences, revise drafts for portfolio-appropriate entries, and publish writing in the class-sponsored DCHS literary magazine Silhouettes (pennames allowed for anonymity).

 

FORMS OF FICTION: 214

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: English 1-Sophomore and Above

This 18-week course combines the former 9-week Mystery and Suspense elective and the former science fiction elective.  This course is open to any student who has an interest in a variety of forms of fiction such as mysteries, suspenseful titles, science fiction titles, and other forms of fiction normally not covered in a regular English class.  Students will be expected to participate in all reading and writing assignments; participate in group activities such as a scavenger hunt and mystery game; complete a project in which groups are responsible for writing, directing and producing a movie appropriate for the genre studied, and complete a final individual book project that is presented to the class.

 

FILM STUDIES: 215

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Sophomore and Above

Students who enjoy movies will appreciate the Film Studies class as they investigate a variety of film genres and evaluate their validity.  Analysis of the movies will include but not be limited to the following aspects:

Upon finishing this course, students will have widened their range of interest in film and enjoy them at a more critical level.

 

 

Essentials of communication: 222

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: English 2

This 18 week course combines the former 9 week Analytical Reading/Word Power elective with the former 9 week elective Essentials of Communication.  The course will emphasize reading and vocabulary strategies and focus on refining grammar skills assessed by ACT, SAT, and employment tests.  Ethical use of technology and other research strategies will round out the course curriculum.

Students will review fundamental elements of writing including the writing process with focus on purpose, audience, organization and development of idea.

  

INTRO TO EDUCATION / EDU 250: 2101

18 Weeks / 1 Credit / Prerequisites:  Teacher Approval-Seniors Only

This is a class recommended for seniors interested in the field of education.  It is a dual credit class through Owensboro Community and Technical College (meaning students receive high school credit as well as college credit).  It is a college sophomore level class taught with the same curriculum used on OCTC’s campus.  The class will transfer to any Kentucky state college or university as the introductory course for elementary and secondary education.  Students interested in middle school education would have to take a different course to fulfill the college requirement for middle school education.  Field hours (opportunities to visit schools in the area) are required for this course.

 

NOTE:  For college credit, registration is required.
