BEGINNING MUSIC THEORY: 551

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for students with a basic understanding of music theory and its application. Melodic and rhythmic dictation will be a focus in this class.

 

AP MUSIC THEORY: 552

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: MUST HAVE Music Department Approval

This Advanced Placement course is a high level study of music theory, composition, and aural skills.  Students who desire to pursue music at a higher level of education should consider this course. *Must pass an entrance test to remain in AP class. Students must have permission from AP Theory teacher before scheduling this class.

 

FUNDAMENTALS OF VOICE/Choir 1: 553

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: None

Study of basic vocal production skills; sight reading techniques, presentation of performance skills and responsibilities as a soloist or an ensemble member.  Preparation for auditions in All-State chorus.

 

CHORAL PERFORMANCE/Choir 2: 554

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: None

Preparation focused on total concert repertoire required for community concerts.  Various periods of music will be studied according to needs of students in preparation for appearances.  Special emphasis will be placed on aesthetic values, responsibility and concert etiquette. Christmas concert participation is required in this class.

 

MUSICAL THEATRE/DRAMA/Choir 3: 555

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: None

Emphasis will be placed on audition process, rehearsal techniques, building of sets and overall production sequences required for annual spring musical production. Further study of all elements of vocal music production.

 

FESTIVAL CHOIR/Choir 4: 556

9 Weeks/1/2 Credit/Prerequisite: None

Preparation for festival competition with concentration on types of music required for these particular concerts and enhancement of vocal skills. Required attendance for graduation ceremony for which choir will sing.

                                                         

 

 ADVANCED CHOIR 4/SENIOR PRESENTATION: 572

18 Weeks/ 1 Credit/Prerequisite: Choir 1, 2, and 3

Performing Arts, fourth year advanced choir seniors will be responsible for one of the following: a research project in the field of choral music; a choral recital; or scenery design for spring show. Approval of the choral music teacher must be obtained in order to receive the accelerated credit.

 

NOTE: Only fourth year seniors meeting ALL prerequisites and completing the assigned project will be eligible for an accelerated credit. If all prerequisites have not been met, or if the project assigned has not been completed, students will receive a regular credit as a participant in Choir 4.

 

CONCERT CHOIR: 575

18 Weeks/ 1 Credit/Prerequisite: Audition

Select Group of Singers:  Meant to place students in an ensemble that is appropriate for their ability level as a singer.  The extended length is meant to promote spiral curriculum and to establish and build a choral program.  Audition.

 

FUNDAMENTALS OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: 557

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Reasonable Instrumental Music Skills

(Freshman and sophomores only during the first semester)

Students will experience the enjoyment and educational value of instrumental music.  Technical skills, aesthetics of music, fundamentals of marching and playing leading toward quality performances are stressed throughout this course.  Students will be expected to perform outside the school day with practice and competitive performances.  This course must be taken in conjunction with Concert Band (558).

 

CONCERT BAND: 558

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fundamentals (557)

(Freshmen and sophomores only during the second semester)

Students will develop fundamental techniques of performance on their instrument, acquire a basic knowledge of music theory, and music history through performance.  Academic requirements are based on the student’s understanding of the five elements of music.  Technical skill, aesthetics of music, and quality performances will be emphasized.  Students will be expected to perform outside of the school day.

 

SYMPHONIC BAND 1: 559

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fundamentals (557) and Concert (558)

(Junior and senior course offered only second semester)

Students will develop advanced techniques of performance on their instrument, utilize their basic knowledge of music theory, and music history through performance.  Fundamentals of technique, theory, and music history are stressed in connection with the performance of more difficult literature.  Students will be expected to perform outside of the school day.

 

MARCHING BAND: 570

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fundamentals (557) and Concert (558) (Junior and senior course offered only first semester)

Students will experience the enjoyment of visual design integrated with musical performance.  The marching band is a fundamental part of Daviess County High School music curriculum.  Leadership and cooperative learning skills are developed and utilized as a means to outstanding musical performances during the first semester.  This course must be taken in conjunction with Symphonic Band (559) or Senior Symphonic Band (571).

 

SENIOR SYMPHONIC BAND 2: 571

18 Weeks/1 Accel. Credit/Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Instrumental Music, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Symphonic Band

Students will demonstrate advanced knowledge and performance skills on their instrument. Each student will perform a formal recital (solo performance with piano/appropriate accompaniment). This recital will be a minimum of 2 selections from different musical periods. In addition each student will perform all major and melodic minor scales by memory and a minimum of two etudes equal to or exceeding expectations for a college freshman. Participation in at least an honor band such as KMEA All-District or All-State. If a student auditions but is not selected for any of these bands they will be required to participate in a Collegiate Honor Band (WKU, Quad State-Murray).

 

                                                                       

BEGINNING BAND: 573                            

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: None

Students will develop fundamental techniques of performance on their instrument. This class is designed to give students the ability to perform well in either the high school band or jazz band upon completion. This class is for students that: missed the opportunity to learn an instrument in Middle School, would like a second chance to succeed in instrumental music, wants to learn a second instrument, or may have transferred from a school without similar beginning band program.

 

JAZZ BAND A.M: 560                               

36 Weeks/No Credit/Prerequisite: Approval of director (No quality points will be awarded)

The course is by audition and invitation only.  Application should be made for acceptance.  Jazz Band is a course introducing the history, theory, and performance of jazz and similar music.  Outside school performances will be expected.  This class will be offered as an AM (before school starts) class.

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Freshman level course. It is suggested that students take both semesters to build the skills for the next 3 years. At least 2 years of string instruction or director approval.

Orchestra emphasizes refinement of musicianship through performance.  Fundamentals of technique and theory are stressed in connection with the performance of increasingly difficult literature.

Students concentrate on technique through performance, studying advanced music and building listening and composition skills.

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite:   (Sophomore or above level course) Fundamentals of String Techniques

Students concentrate on technique through performance, studying advanced music and building listening and composition skills.

 

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA 1: 565

18 Weeks/1Credit/Prerequisite:  (Junior/Senior level course) Concert Orchestra or Director Approval

Students continue to refine their skills in music theory and technique through the study of more difficult music literature, while placing the music they perform in a historical perspective. 

 

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA 2: 566

18 Weeks/1Credit/Prerequisite:  (Junior/Senior level course) Concert Orchestra or Director Approval

Students continue to refine their skills in music theory and technique through the study of more difficult music literature, while placing the music they perform in a historical perspective.

In addition to the performance of more difficult literature, senior students choose an area of concentration (including, but not limited to: conducting, leadership, music careers, teaching pedagogy, history, theory, composition, etc.) and present a final project in that area 1st semester. Students who qualify may choose AP Music Theory as their project.

 

SENIOR FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA 2: 568

18 Weeks/1Credit/Prerequisite: (Senior level course) Chamber Orchestra or Director Approval

In addition to the performance of more difficult literature, senior students choose an area of concentration (including, but not limited to conducting, leadership, music careers, teaching pedagogy, history, theory, composition, etc.) and present a final project in that area 2nd semester in order to receive one accelerated credit. Students who qualify may choose AP Music Theory as their project.
