PRINT JOURNALISM: 500

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: None

This course will specifically deal with the study of journalism, print media only.  Basic skills in news writing, as well as feature, sports and editorial writing will be taught.  Advertising, layout and design via desktop publishing are emphasized as well.  This course is a prerequisite, preparatory course for the school newspaper and yearbook staffs.

 

JOURNALISM INTERN: 501

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Print Journalism, application and interview

Students in Print Journalism must apply to be an intern on the Big Red Machine newspaper staff.  Students will be assigned a temporary position on the staff for either the fall or spring semester.  Students will advance journalistic writing and design skills as intern reporters.  Application for a permanent staff position may be made following the internship.

 

DIGITAL MEDIA: 502

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: None

The purpose of this course is to give students an introduction to the world of digital media.  Students will experience the many formats and genres of video and film through projects ranging from advertising to news production and short film making.  Students taking the course must be self-motivated and willing to work independently. 

 

ADVANCED JOURNALISM 1: 503 (NEWSPAPER STAFF)

36 Weeks/2 Credits/Prerequisite: Journalism Intern, application and interview

Students must apply for a position on the newspaper staff (Big Red Machine).  This is a hands-on, practical application of journalistic skills learned in Print Journalism (writing, headlining, photography, advertising, layout design, desktop publishing).

 

EDITORSHIP & PRESENTATION: 513 

36 Weeks/2 Credits/Prerequisite: Print Journalism, Journalism Intern, Advanced Journalism 1

Students will continue to advance journalism skills and will hold an editorship on staff. As a culminating project, fourth-year senior staff members will be responsible for researching, designing, and delivering a 15-minute journalistic presentation in order to receive one accelerated credit.

 

ADVANCED PUBLISHING: 504 (YEARBOOK STAFF)

36 Weeks/2 Credits/Prerequisite: Print Journalism, application and interview

Students must apply for a position on the yearbook staff (Echoes).  Skills learned in Print Journalism will be used to produce an award-winning yearbook.  *Photographers may apply for a staff position as well.

                                                                    

 

THE ART OF PUBLIC SPEAKING: 511

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: None

This course will explore the methods and techniques of speech writing, public speaking, oral  interpretation of literature and debate.  Students will be required to speak on a variety of topics.

 

ADVANCED PUBLIC SPEAKING: 512

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Art of Public Speaking

This course is for the students who wish to explore advanced techniques of communication.  The course will cover speech writing, business presentations, contest speaking and advanced debate.

 

DEBATE AND COMPETITIVE FORENSICS: 581

18 Weeks/1 Credit/Prerequisite: Public Speaking

Course would expand on students’ knowledge of debate and competitive forensics.  Course would explore the various formats of professional and competitive debate as well as collegiate level competitive forensics.
