THE PROCESS OF SCHEDULING
After you have studied the requirements of your class, the curriculum, and course descriptions, you will be ready to make decisions for your individual class schedule. At the end of this book, you will find a Practice Scheduler for all four years of study at Daviess County. Try to plan all four years. This will become part of your ILP, Individual Learning Plan. There are four vertical blocks representing the four classes you will be enrolled in each nine weeks. As you will see in the curriculum selections, some courses are nine, eighteen, and thirty-six weeks long. Each horizontal block represents nine weeks of study. As you practice filling in the blocks to establish your schedule, keep in mind the length of time for each course. How you fill in the blocks and register for classes does not guarantee that you will have those classes at any specific time, only that you will have the class or an alternative selection. Be sure, when registering for classes, that you have selected courses that will fill all time slots.
Advocate Meeting for Scheduling
During the month of February, parents/guardians will be contacted by your advocate teachers. All 9th grade parents are required to meet individually with the advocate teacher. For students entering grades 10-12, the advocate teacher will give you the opportunity for a face-to-face appointment. If you so choose, the advocate teacher will be happy to meet with you. Individual meetings will take place either before or after school hours, and possibly on weekends. Scheduling Fairs have been organized for your convenience on Saturdays, March 1st and 8th from 9:00 am to noon. Check with your advocate teacher for his/her availability. All schedule requests must be complete by March 14th.
Scheduling online
DCHS offers an online registration program. This will allow any student to logon to the system (provided there is Internet access available), and request courses and alternates. The scheduling website will open on February 11th and close on March 14th. During that window, students may securely logon at any time and review/edit their requests. After March 14th, all data will be taken into our master scheduling program. Students may access the website by visiting www.dchs.dcps.org and clicking the Online Registration link.
Only deficiencies and/or inaccuracies in your required courses will be reason for change in the fall.
For freshmen and sophomores, Basic Studies in the first two years of high school must be satisfied before going on to the junior year and selecting an Academy of Study. It is recommended that you plan for four years of education. Complete your Practice Scheduler before your appointment with your advocate. These practice sheets will be kept in your folder for future reference during your years as a student here at Daviess County.
If there is doubt concerning the difficulty of classes or at what level you should register, see your advocate, guidance counselor, or your present teacher in that area for advice. Challenge yourself as a student, but don’t overload either.
COURSE PERMISSION
There will be some courses that require teacher permission before enrolling. Please read course descriptions to determine which courses require an application from the instructor. We will also ask advisement from middle school English and Math instructors to determine which courses are best for each 8th grade student. Students may or may not take the course, but a decision to register for classes not recommended shall be recorded and will be the responsibility of the student and parent. Parents should be involved in these decision-making selections!
You have been given a great amount of information in this scheduling handbook. Process the information and ask questions as you go. The decisions you are about to make could affect your life and the choices you may want to make in the future. Exciting times are ahead for all students of Daviess County High School. We look forward to a terrific 2008-2009 school year.
